An egg can be a delicious, delightful treat – but this is a secret that all chicken owners want to keep from their flock.  Once a chicken gets a taste of the gooey center of one of these little orbs they will keep on helping themselves to more eggs.  Egg-eaters will teach other chickens the secret of the surprise contents inside an egg.  Before you know it you will have a full flock of naughty egg-pecking, egg-eaters.

This is one situation in which this old adage that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is definitely true.  On today’s episode I will go into all the ins-and-outs of egg-eating.  Why do chickens egg eat?  How does it usually start? I will also tell you some tricks to prevent it from starting.  And if you are too late and the egg-eating has already begun – I will share with you several strategies to put an end to that behavior.

I also discuss a recent interview with chicken blogger, Lauren Scheuer.  Ms. Scheuer writes and illustrates her blog “Scratch and Peck” and has recently published an autobiographical book of her life and adventures with keeping chickens.  Ms. Scheuer’s work is charming and well worth checking out.

Silkie in a chicken diaper

In the Sally Sidenotes segment this week, I challenge all of the hoopla and taunting caused by a recent NPR article.  NPR interviewed the owners of mypetchicken.com and the editor of Backyard Poultry Magazine about the growing interest in keeping chickens and the accessories that can accompany that hobby.  There was much tongue in cheek writing in this NPR article about chickens and chicken paraphernalia such as chicken saddles and diapers. Are chicken diapers as absolutely ridiculous as NPR and all of the other guffawing side liners would have you think?
